Planning For Your Gap Year

The number of students who are opting to take a gap year before studies or working life has increased steadily over the last few years and there are now more options on offer than ever before. Taking a gap year, either before or after university, has always been popular; many students save for months and choose to go travelling to experience some of what the world has to offer before they settle in to their studies or working life.

If you are considering taking a gap year then you will need to think about how you will spend that time; travelling is only one of the options available. Some students prefer to work during their gap year, saving up money to help fund them through their studies whilst others may try to do an unpaid internship in the career field they are interested in so that they can gain experience and increase their chances of employment. Another option to consider is working for a charitable organisation abroad, perhaps volunteering in Africa. These can be a wonderful option as it enables you to broaden your knowledge and be in a totally different environment from normal whilst also helping to improve the lives of people in a community.

Making the most of you gap year

If you do choose to take a gap year then it can provide a fantastic opportunity to give you time to really explore the world; many adults in the working world can only fantasise about being able to have a year away from their daily lives and responsibilities to explore new countries and cultures. Often time students find that they can experience a sinking feeling after their travels have ended as it can be a shock to the system to return to your daily life after travelling and being faced with the demands of finding employment and returning to sense of normalcy; this however is a common feeling and is a small price to pay for having a wealth of experiences to look back, such as volunteering in Africa.

Planning a gap year does take time so if you are planning on being abroad, whether through travelling or volunteering, then you will need to make sure you have the relevant injections required for each country you are travelling too; you will also need to thoroughly research the places you are travelling to as some may require visas for you to be able to be in the country legally. Keeping in touch with loved ones is important so that they know you are safe and well and have an idea of your travel schedule and when you will be checking in with them.

The Growth of Unusual Hobbies

A few decades ago the range of hobbies available to the average UK resident was fairly limited. Adults typically had hobbies such as gardening, walking, playing golf, lawn bowls, fishing or crafts such as knitting or woodwork. As the appetite for things such as foreign travel and unusual food has grown, and disposable incomes have risen, more and more different types of hobbies have become accessible to large sections of the population.

A generation ago, cooking and preparing food for the family or friends was something that was an essential chore that was done mainly out of necessity rather than for enjoyment. Most of the population ate plain food and cooking was almost exclusively a female activity, with only the very top chefs being men. However in recent years the huge popularity of television cooking shows such as Masterchef have brought gourmet food and cuisine into the mainstream and cooking or food in general is becoming an important hobby market. Enthusiasts, known as foodies, are happy to spend money on top class or unusual ingredients and recipe books, and will happily buy tickets for food shows or travel considerable distances to go to an organic producer or farm shop. If you have a friend or family member who is interested in food, this makes buying gifts easy. They will always appreciate the latest kitchen gadget or recipe book by a famous celebrity chef. There are cookery schools up and down the country which run a large range of courses from a few hours in the evening to a week or more where your friend can refine their technique or learn a whole new set of cookery skills. Most will also offer vouchers so if you are unable to choose, that can be left up to the recipient.

Adventure hobbies are also a massive growth market. Activities such as driving days where you can take an expensive sports car around a racing track are very popular for gifts for birthdays or Christmas. There are many different companies offering these sorts of experience days and vouchers are available at all if you struggle to choose. If you have someone in the family or a friend who is into an adventurous hobby, another option is to buy them a magazine subscription for the sector they’re interested in. Nearly every niche you can think of has a relevant magazine, from a pilot magazine subscription to a fishing magazine. Discounts are available for purchasing at least a year’s subscription, and buying a subscription for a magazine will provide an ongoing gift which will educate about the chosen subject as well as provide an interesting read once a month.

The Day I Lost my Rab Bergen Jacket

If you're like me you've probably lost a thing or two that was valuable. Every day people lose car keys, money, mobile phones, and a host of other things. The problem is the more valuable a lost item, the worse the experience tends to be. I had just such an experience not too long ago on a train trip from Salzburg to Newcastle.

I had gone to Salzburg with a group of friends on an extended holiday, and I had to leave a few days early in order to be back for work. Being a little disappointed about having to leave my friends and travel alone, I was distracted the entire time I was on the train. Thankfully, I was travelling on an off day so there were plenty of empty seats in my carriage. I chose one next to the window and sat down, dropping my things in the empty seat next to me.

I did manage to somewhat enjoy the scenery and all the little towns as the kilometres rolled away. But after what seemed like an eternity, boredom and disappointment set in and I eventually fell asleep. That may not sound like a big deal, but one of my greatest fears has always been falling asleep on a train and missing my stop.

Sometime during that trip my Rab Bergen jacket from rab clothing , which I was using as a blanket, fell to the floor. I remember waking two or three times, not knowing whether or not I had missed my destination. The final time I woke, I did so with a shocking start as I felt the hand of the conductor on my shoulder. He told me we were at my destination and I needed to get off the train quickly so it could continue on. I thanked the conductor, gathered up my things, and hurried off as the doors closed behind me.

I briefly thought about my friends back in Salzburg before realizing I was cold. Suddenly it dawned on me; I had left my jacket on the train. My favourite jacket, my Rab Bergen jacket which had seen me through thick and thin, was quickly drifting away down the tracks. I grabbed the first worker I could find and explained to him my plight, but in the back of my mind I knew I would never see it again. I was right.

I eventually replaced the jacket with a new one, but it was never the same. Not that the old one was better than the new one, I just couldn't believe I was so stupid as to leave it without even looking. Needless to say, I take much better care of my things nowadays.

Few Important Considerations for Boating Holidays in the UK

For a boating enthusiast, it is not really easy to find a place for boating where imagination meets reality. Fortunately there are a number of beautiful waterways in the UK to live out your dream holiday. Boating holidays in the UK are becoming ever popular and that is mainly because canals in the UK are the healthiest they have been in their two hundred year history. It is like a dream come true when you get top quality boats to cruise on these canals. You can sightsee in historic towns or enjoy the peace of the countryside, working the locks, or quaint country pubs. You can also get away from everything for an enjoyable and relaxing break.

However, if you are planning a boating holiday in the UK, you need to pay attention to a number of things. One of the most important things to consider is the size of a boat required for maximum fun. The size is based on the number of beds available in a boat. Here, you first need to consider the size of your party or the people you are coming with and choose your boat accordingly. It is also a good idea to learn more about the types of boats available for you to make a choice.

When coming over for a boating holiday, you should know about the things you have to bring with you. For instance, you need to bring all your holiday paperwork so you know what is included in your package. Usually, you get bed, cooking utensils, and crockery. However, it is important to know that towels are not usually offered, so you may want to bring some with you. Also, even though cooking utensils are provided, you usually need to arrange food and drinks on your own. It is very important to know what is included in your package and, more importantly, what is not.

For first time holidaymakers, it is important to choose a company that will help you have a great time on water, while knowing you are a novice. Choosing a good company is important because they often give you a full demonstration of all equipment available on your boat. At the same time, they give you a trial run to make sure you find everything okay while driving and mooring the boat. You are also provided with a manual that gives instructions and useful information on driving your boat.

There is something special about arranging boating holidays in the UK. It is interesting, fun, and a learning experience; more and more people are planning theirs. It is an excellent holiday idea, but if this is your first experience make sure you pay attention to abovementioned points to turn it into a remarkable experience.

Camping at Holiday Parks

Holiday parks are traditionally known for the fact that they offer self-catering camping holidays for individuals and families. Although holiday parks have upgraded themselves to a large extent and now offer different options in terms of accommodation, camping is still one of the most popular accommodation choices there is.

Camping, however, has also moved up in the ranks of accommodation. Tents have become easier to transport and pitch. They also come in convenient sizes to suit the size of your family as well as the various holiday needs that you may have.

What tents don’t offer are WCs, bathroom facilities, kitchens etc. This is one of the challenges of camping that holiday parks overcome. Many holiday parks offer various options in terms of convenience – from just bathroom blocks to more sophisticated bathrooms, WCs and washing up facilities. They even offer electrical hook-up points so that you can use your electrical equipment (like the all important hairdryer) in the comfort of your own tent as well as lights and other fixtures.

The camping facilities at holiday parks can roughly be divided into three main categories:

  • Sites without electricity

  • Sites with electricity

  • Ready-to-use sites.

The sites without electricity are meant for the die-hard camper that wants the charm of an oil lamp and the campfire. Usually there are basic bathroom blocks available within walking distance, but not much further in the way of conveniences (like washing up facilities. There will be water and waste disposal sites available nearby.

Sites with electricity are very popular as the camping doesn’t offer much in the way of home comforts. The electricity helps to ensure that there are lights to turn on. Some of the sites are on hard pitches – concrete blocks laid especially to accommodate the tents – and others on the usual soft pitches – no concrete slabs. There is also an electrical hook-up point from where you can lead the electricity into the tent. These sites tend to be a little more comfortable in terms of washing up facilities and bathrooms and offer even small children the opportunity to experience camping in a pleasant environment. Very often these camping sites are also pet friendly.

Ready-to-use tents are aimed at the first-time camper or campers that don’t want to bring their own tent. These tents are also well suited to the needs of a family. The tents are usually divided into separate bedrooms, come with electricity and also have parking areas and garden furniture for the camper’s comfort. Once again, full facilities are available within easy walking distance – once again aimed at making a first camping experience as pleasant as possible.

Take a Look at SealSkinz Gloves

When taking part in any kind of outdoor activity, the way your hands feel are often one of the most important things that will help you perform well. Nothing makes this more apparent than when your hands are not comfortable. After all, your hands are the part of your body that you use the most. That's why SealSkinz have spent so much time and effort to make sure that your chosen product will properly for the uses they are designed for.

Not all situations will require the same sort of or same levels of protection and in some cases too much protection can actually hinder someone's ability to perform. So to counter this, there is obviously a need for some sort of design process to take place for each sport from mountain biking through all the way through to fishing. It's because each sport has its needs in terms of equipment that it's not possible to make just a warm and waterproof glove.

Mountain biking for instance will require padding in certain places where if you were playing another sport padding may cause you to be a little clumsy. Some of the designs are skin tight such as the ones that are designed for use by fishermen who often need to tie knots and perform delicate operations with a fish on the end of a hook.

At the same time, there are many other outdoor sports not just fishing that people will need gloves other reasons. They may need a water proof glove that will also insulate against very cold temperatures. These are all things that have been taken in to consideration by Danalco who are the manufacturers of SealSkinz gloves.

Thankfully SealSkinz have come up with some of their own designs which, means that a hand can be submerged in water and still remain dry. In the same glove, a hand can become sweaty and yet the material in the glove can actually allow the moisture to still pass through and away from the skin. This is achieved by using some of Danalco's patented fabrics that are highly engineered materials.

The thing that makes SealSkinz gloves so appealing apart from the obvious quality in the design and manufacture is that they are so affordable. The technology involved in every SealSkinz product would justify much higher prices than they have set for retail. This has enabled Danalco to get a much larger market share since SealSkinz products have been in production.

That's another thing that sets SealSkinz gloves apart from other manufacturers and that's how long they have been around. They've been producing different products for the SealSkinz range since 1993. It was in 1997 that they produced their first completely waterproof glove and introduced it to the range. Now the Danalco products are respected around the world and the brand is going from strength to strength.
