Planning For Your Gap Year
The number of students who are opting to take a gap year before studies or working life has increased steadily over the last few years and there are now more options on offer than ever before. Taking a gap year, either before or after university, has always been popular; many students save for months and choose to go travelling to experience some of what the world has to offer before they settle in to their studies or working life.
If you are considering taking a gap year then you will need to think about how you will spend that time; travelling is only one of the options available. Some students prefer to work during their gap year, saving up money to help fund them through their studies whilst others may try to do an unpaid internship in the career field they are interested in so that they can gain experience and increase their chances of employment. Another option to consider is working for a charitable organisation abroad, perhaps volunteering in Africa. These can be a wonderful option as it enables you to broaden your knowledge and be in a totally different environment from normal whilst also helping to improve the lives of people in a community.
Making the most of you gap year
If you do choose to take a gap year then it can provide a fantastic opportunity to give you time to really explore the world; many adults in the working world can only fantasise about being able to have a year away from their daily lives and responsibilities to explore new countries and cultures. Often time students find that they can experience a sinking feeling after their travels have ended as it can be a shock to the system to return to your daily life after travelling and being faced with the demands of finding employment and returning to sense of normalcy; this however is a common feeling and is a small price to pay for having a wealth of experiences to look back, such as volunteering in Africa.
Planning a gap year does take time so if you are planning on being abroad, whether through travelling or volunteering, then you will need to make sure you have the relevant injections required for each country you are travelling too; you will also need to thoroughly research the places you are travelling to as some may require visas for you to be able to be in the country legally. Keeping in touch with loved ones is important so that they know you are safe and well and have an idea of your travel schedule and when you will be checking in with them.
